Publisher's Synopsis
Isaac Asimov and J.R.R. Tolkien: two grand masters of speculative fiction. Both Asimov and Tolkien were men with humble beginnings, unique worldviews, academic prowess, and loving relationships. More important, however, is that Asimov and Tolkien were polar opposites in many aspects of life. Indeed, only one thing tied the two authors together: their extraordinary imaginations, imaginations that have captivated millions of readers for almost a century. How can two men who are so different in so many ways share such similar accomplishments? How does an author's life influence his writing style? How do an author's relationships and worldview influence his writing? These are some of the questions answered in "The Imagination Men" - submitted as a master's thesis in 2015. The events in the lives of Asimov and Tolkien that contributed to their interests, writing styles, and works of fiction are examined. Their relationships and worldviews are also surveyed, for these concepts were instrumental in developing the bodies of work that continue to captivate audiences across the globe. The literature of both authors, especially their crowning achievements - Asimov's Foundation Universe and Tolkien's Middle-earth Legendarium - are examined, as well as the legacies that both authors left behind. The contrasting worldviews and influences of both authors and how each author's writing was impacted by them are also highlighted. It is hoped that the reader will discover that the imagination does not discriminate. Indeed, anyone of any background and worldview can create captivating fiction. It is also hoped that the lives and works of Isaac Asimov and J.R.R. Tolkien - "The Imagination Men" - are celebrated and promoted so that their award-winning bodies of work will stretch to unforeseen futures and undiscovered worlds.
