Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Idylls of Theocritus

A few words may be said in explanation of the design of this edition.

I have tried to bring together in the Introduction the result of recent investigation into the literary history of the Alexandrian writers, so far as concerns Theocritus. An enormous amount of labour has been bestowed on this question in recent years, but chie?y in foreign magazines and monographs, and the results have never yet been introduced into an edition of Theocritus, although they are very necessary to a right understanding of his works and his position in Greek poetry 1.
