The House of Atreus is a collection of three plays written by Aeschylus, one of the most important Greek tragedians of the 5th century BC. Agamemnon tells the story of the king of Mycenae who returns home after ten years of fighting in the Trojan War, only to face the wrath of his wife Clytemnestra. She seeks revenge for the sacrifice of their daughter Iphigenia and her lover Aegisthus helps her carry out her plan. In Libation-Bearers, Orestes, the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, seeks revenge for his father's murder by killing his mother and her lover. The play explores the themes of justice, vengeance, and the consequences of one's actions. Finally, in Furies, Orestes is tormented by the avenging spirits of his mother's family, the Furies, for his crime of matricide. Apollo, the god of prophecy, helps Orestes defend himself in a trial before the Athenian court.
