Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The History of Herodotus, Vol. 3 of 4: Translated From the Greek, With Notes

When the Greeks reclined upon their couches at meals and en tertainments, they pulled oi? Their fandals; if any one on any occafion wanted to leave the apartment, he put them on again. Therefore, fays the poet, I do that with refpeét to your man ners, as a man does at an entertainment, who, wanting to go out ofrthe rqom, ul'es another perfon' s fandals. It would by no means be an nninterefting work, to trace the meaning of our proverbial exprefiions to their remotell application. For my own part I apt well convinced, that more of them might be dif-t covered in the culloms and languages of Greece and Rome.
