Arthur Machen 1863-1947) was a Welsh novelist, short story writer, journalist and actor. He wrote horror, fantasy and supernatural fiction. His love of Celtic, Roman and medieval history is seen in many of his stories. The Hill of Dreams is a semi-autobiographical novel. Lucian Taylor grew up in rural Wales. The Hill of Dreams in the title is an old Roman fort where Lucian has strange sensual visions. When Lucian grows up he moves to London where he tries making a living as a writer. He endures poverty and suffering while pursuing his art.
