TOM LARSEN'S DAY GOT interesting when he left the seminar on blowout prevention at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio and headed for home on the Gulf Coast. A beat-up Crown Vic started tailing him so inexpertly that the only experience the driver must have had was watching bad spy movies. Not without his own resources, he managed to subdue the two bad boys but let the driver-an apparently uninvolved young lady-get away. After a few threats and some high-tech assistance from the Hidalgo Trust and his psychiatrist sister in San Francisco, Tom listened as the perps told him what they knew. It was enough to launch Tom and some other guardians of the Trust on a search that led to the jungles of the Amazon, the cities of Brazil, and the troubled waters of the Gulf of Mexico. A terrorist attack to destroy drilling rigs and poison the Gulf of Mexico with a flood of toxic crude turned out to be merely the forerunner of an even more dire threat.
