As far as regards the notes of Porson, omissions and abridgments, with few exceptions, seemed neither expe dient nor necessary; from the value of each individual observation, and the precision and conciseness of the'terms in which the information is conveyed. The metrical rules laid down by Porson in his Preface and Supplement, the editor has endeavoured to exhibit to the student in a connected and well-digested system. Some of the judi cious remarks of Elmsley in his review of Porson's Hecuba have been incorporated; and, in order to complete the subject of metres, a compendious view of the species in most frequent use in choruses has been appended.
