Before doing this, however, he would like to explain the nature of the present book and the circumstances which caused it to be written. The prime object of the book is to encourage investiga tion into certain phenomena of the circulation and of the nervous system which have not hitherto been investigated from the purely clinical stand point - for example, the relationship of the pulse to the respiration, the mechanism of breathing in effort and at rest, the meaning and effect upon the general circulation of the great blood lakes of the Skin, abdomen, and lungs.
