James, May Sinclair, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, along with texts on the theme from Pliny the Younger, Beowulf, The Panchatantra, et al.; these, together with epigraphs drawn from James Joyce and Sir Thomas Browne, reinforce the literary credentials of the work and the whole is enhanced by Ward's shadowy designs.
