Though fighting for opposing sides, Dick Mason and his cousin, Harry Kenton, escape unscathed from the Battle of Bull Run. As the war in the west intensifies, Dick joins General Thomas' army in time to defeat the Confederacy at Mill Spring. Sent with important dispatches from General Buell, Dick finds himself trapped behind enemy lines, helpless to warn his comrades of a surprise attack.
