Atherton (1857-1948) was a prominent and prolific American author, many of whose novels were set in her home state of California. In addition to her novels she wrote short stories, essays and articles for magazines and newspapers on such issues as feminism, politics and war. This short novel published in 1908 is set in Ben Nevis in the Caribbean in 1842 and includes four illustrations by Clarence Coles Phillips, an American illustrator known for his signature use of negative space.
