That is, until university, where she discovered her rebellious side and realised her true sexuality. Little did she know, in five years' time, Maria would be alone on a bed in a mental ward fighting for her life. Feeling confident and accomplished with an Ivy League degree in hand, Maria summoned the courage to come out as a lesbian to her Greek Orthodox family and community. The reveal did not go as planned.
