Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Golden Era, Vol. 39: An Illustrated Monthly Magazine; December, 1890

This word negro recalls to my mind the little incident of how I learned it, which I will brie?y relate, if you will pardon the interpolation. I was going to school, the first school I ever attended, it lasted three months. The school-house was built of unhewn logs, and stood in the middle of a small clearing. My mother had spun and wove some yards of woolen cloth for the teacher, to pay him for my tuition.
