This is the story of a couple wrapped in privilege and driven by all-consuming ambition. Author Edith Wharton (born 1862) was born to a wealthy New York family and known to those close to her as "Pussy Jones." The family had made their money in real estate and the saying "keeping up with the Joneses" is said to refer to Wharton's father's family. Wharton was born during the Civil War and she became fluent in French, German, and Italian. While in Europe, she was educated by tutors and governesses. She also read from her father's library although her mother forbade her to read novels until she was married. Wharton became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature with her novel The Age of Innocence.
