Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Geographical Conceptions of Columbus: A Critical Consideration of Four Problems

One of the essential questions which Christopher Columbus was called upon to face in formulating his project for a westward voyage was that of the distance to be traversed between Europe and Asia. The Cir cumference of the globe being taken as the prob lem resolved itself into (i) the calculation of the length of a degree and (2) an estimate of the extension of Asia eastward. The present study is a discussion of the ideas of Columbus on these two points.
