Not illustrated. 1896 edition. Excerpt: ... 2092 William, born in Blairgowrie, Scotland, son of James and Euphemia (McDonald) Butter. He came to America in the Spring of 1801. Before leaving he secured a letter from his parish minister, of which MISS M. F. BUTTRE, RIDGEWOOD, N. J., submits a copy, followed by her comments: Blairgowrie, Feb. 19, 1801. These certify that William Buttre, an unmarried man, was born in the Parish and l1ved in it till now, when he removes out of it with an unblemished character; and nothing is known to us that may hinder his being received into any Christian congregation or family where Providence may order his lot. Is attested by James Johnstone, Minister, Peter Forbes, S. Ck., Geo. Brown, Elder. ' The above is a copy of one of the papers, and I note in it that the name was originally spelled Butter--and in a darker ink, and presumbly in grandfather's writing-- the er is marked over to re. "This is the only one of his papers in which I find the name spelled as it was in Scotland, proving that he must have changed the spelling as soon as he reached America." He remained for a time in New York City. Taking a dislike to his own name, he changed it to Buttre, putting the letter r before the e, to take away the plain name of Butter; although in a letter written in 1846 to his family in Scotland he signed his name Butter. William Buttre, as he was known in America, became naturalized and a citizen in New York City April 29, 1807. He was a cabinet maker, which trade he followed. He removed to Albany, N. Y., and later to Auburn, N. Y., where he .opened a store. At the outbreak of the war in 1812 he enlisted in the army, and was commissioned Feb. 1, 1813, Lieutenant in Col.
