The book is an attempt to put the Indian gender reality in the perspective of feminism both in the European and the Indian context. The introduction includes a brief history of feminism in all its dispensations and ramifications intended to cater to the need of those encountering the subject for the first time. The first section of the book deals with feminism as a Western-derived notion and studies some canonical Western feminist texts critically highlighting its different epistemological premises and theoretical stand-points. The second section focuses on some Indian thinkers who constructed the discipline of Indian feminism in contradistinction to the Western theoretical formulations. The last section deals with the gender reality reflected in Indian cultural texts encompassing a wide spectrum from ancient literature to television commercials.
