Publisher's Synopsis
Written in 1872 and 1879, the two volumes that make up the epic poem Martín Fierro are the culmination of the gaucho genre and the greatest exponent of Argentine literature worldwide. Through the narration of the hero's adventures -the gaucho Fierro, one of the most vital, brutal and contradictory characters in the national literature-, José Hernández reveals the harsh reality that the men of the 19th century were faced with sent to the border to fight against the Indians and denounces the abuses of power by a corrupt and arbitrary state. Martín Fierro has become intertwined with his world to such an extent that it is ours; with our previous and later literature, our language, our thought, our politics, our values and ways of living and feeling and looking at that world, which we no longer know if they come from the world or from the poem.
