A gastric sleeve is a type of surgery that reduces the size of the stomach by removing a large part of it. In this surgery, the patient is first put to sleep and then the surgeon makes a small incision in the lower abdomen. Once inside, the surgeon removes some of the stomach's walls, then closes up the stomach, leaving a sleeve of less than 10 inches. The sleeve is then stitched closed and attached to the stomach.
