Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Garden of the Lord

This book is not addressed primarily to the clergy, but rather to that large public which, at least in the Anglican Communion, vigorously asserts its interest in the Church. And in her clergy and lay workers. It is neither a theolog ical treatise nor a handbook on parochial ef fectiveness, although it necessarily treats of theological matters and is concerned chie?y with parochial affairs, and methods of Church work.

It attempts to bring together and present as a cognate whole the various facts, conditions, and objects of criticism which are listed near the end of Chapter I. It is intended to be wholly practical, and to deal primarily with matters not commonly touched upon even by writers of handbooks. If it shall serve to stim ulate in the direction of the reforms which are indicated, it will have succeeded in its purpose; and it is offered to its readers in the single hope that in however incon siderable a fashion, it may contribute to the furtherance of clear thought about problems connected with God's Holy Catholic Church.
