The translator begs to return his grateful thanks to lieutenant-general Sir Beauchamp Walker, zud Dragoon Guards, director-general of Military Education, for the friendly encouragement and the material help which he has been pleased to give during the progress of this translation, by revising the proof sheets from the commencement, and making many valuable suggestions and additions; also to Colonel Lonsdale Hale, late of the Royal Engineers, who, amidst other important professional work, has been good enough to look through the proof-sheets of the later sections, and has also made many valuable comments and rendered other assistance.
