The Brunelli family left Sicily in 1903 to settle in Northern California. Joey, born in 1930, is their fourth generation. Taro Sakamoto and his son rescue Joey at the risk of their own lives. In return, the Brunellis defend their new friends after Japan attacks Pearl Harbor. And they protect their farm when the Sakamotos are sent to an Internment Camp in Utah. Ten years later, when Joey deserts the Army during the Korean War, Masaru helps Joey escape capture. Joey establishes a new identity in Thailand but twenty five years later the Army hasn't forgotten....
