This novel tells the story of Karl Hoffman, the author's grandfather, who is the piano player and film explainer in Limbach, Saxony. The arrival of sound puts the film explainer at odds with his greatest love, the cinema. Then the Nazis arrive, bringing with them a hope of a return to the old ways.
