Publisher's Synopsis

The Fable of Cupid and Psyche is a classic tale from ancient Greek mythology, retold by Thomas Taylor. The story follows the beautiful mortal, Psyche, who is so stunning that people begin to worship her instead of the goddess Venus. Angry at this, Venus sends her son, Cupid, to make Psyche fall in love with a monster. However, Cupid falls in love with Psyche himself and begins to visit her every night in secret. Psyche, curious about her lover's identity, disobeys Cupid's orders and lights a lamp to see him, causing him to flee. In order to win back Cupid's love, Psyche must complete a series of impossible tasks set by Venus. With the help of various gods and creatures, including ants and a river god, Psyche completes the tasks and is reunited with Cupid. The Fable of Cupid and Psyche is a timeless story of love, trust, and perseverance that has captivated readers for centuries.1795. This fable was extracted from the Metamorphoses of Apuleius, originally written in Latin, to which is added a poetical paraphrase on the Speech of Diotima in the Banquet of Plato; Four Hymns, etc., with an introduction, in which the meaning of the fable is unfolded.
