Lizzie Eustace, the heroine of THE EUSTACE DIAMONDS by Trollope, marries for money and when her husband dies she not only inheritsthe family estate but also pockets the family diamonds, despite the demands of the Eustace lawyers that they be returned. She looks for support from her cousin and legal advisor Frank Greystock, but he is not won by her charms; unlike the stuffy Lord Fawn,who proposes to her but stipulates that the diamonds be returned as a condition of their engagement. Lizzie withdraws to her estate and gathers together a curious collection of house guests. 2 robberies and a Grat deal of deception later, Lizzie finds herslef obliged to marry the fashionable preacher Mr Emilius - without sufficiently enquiring into his shady past.
