Publisher's Synopsis

The Duenna is a three-act comic opera written by Richard Brinsley Sheridan. The story is set in Spain and follows the love affair between the young nobleman, Don Antonio, and the beautiful singer, Clara d'Almanza. However, Don Antonio's father has arranged a marriage for him with a wealthy but unattractive woman named Donna Louisa. In order to escape this unwanted union, Don Antonio enlists the help of his friend, the cunning Don Ferdinand, who comes up with a plan to trick Donna Louisa into falling in love with him instead. The plan involves disguising Clara as a duenna, or chaperone, for Donna Louisa, and having her act as a go-between for Don Ferdinand and Donna Louisa. However, complications arise when Donna Louisa's father, Don Jerome, becomes suspicious of the duenna's true identity and sets out to uncover the truth. The Duenna is a classic example of Sheridan's witty and satirical writing style, and is considered one of the most successful comic operas of the late 18th century. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
