John Burchard was born at Haslach, near Strasburg, in the middle of the fifteenth century. Intended for the Church, he was educated, from earliest childhood, amidst ecclesiastical surroundings. But instead of following a course of theology - which then required ten years' close study to obtain the Doctor's degree - Burchard, practical man that he was, chose to follow the path which would lead him to the same goal with a sure hope of honour and fortune, within four ears.
