Publisher's Synopsis
After an ill-fated summer romance and an internet screed ruin Edwina Hearst's reputation, she thinks the school year is going to be a total bust. She is less than dirt at school, either ignored or put down. But that morning, everything changes. Edwina meets Terra McManus, the new kid in school, and each of them is summoned to a secret meeting in the unfinished wing of the school. They learn there what separates them from their classmates, what makes them...deviant. But will it come at too high a cost? Is this new world worth the danger? It's certainly a long way from the adolescent love that buds in Edwina's heart... Excerpt from book: With only three minutes gone, someone sat down across from Edwina, and she could not bring herself to look up. Continuing to scroll through Twitter but not reading anything that crossed in front of her eyes, Edwina was shocked when the boy spoke to her. "You know, my mom says those things are rotting our brains." Edwina did not recognize the voice, and looked up to see a skinny boy with black, curly hair, and very unusual, gold glasses. They looked like Edwina's grandpa's glasses, full-round and shiny gold-plated with tortoise shell clasps. His eyes were dark, nearly black, and they were looking directly at Edwina. His brown pea coat was open, revealing a crisp flannel shirt underneath, tucked into skinny, boot-cut cords that paired well with his suede shoes. He was stylish but dressed like a full-grown man, though he was certainly around Edwina's age. "Your phone," he said, pointing at the device in Edwina's hands. "I mean." "Right," she said. "Of course. I knew what you...are you new here?" The young man laughed and nodded, pulling his glasses from his face and rubbing them on his fashionable coat. "Yeah. I'm Terra." "Like...earth?" "Very good. My parents met in Latin club in college. They thought it was clever I guess. They are also kind of hippies but what are you going to do?" "I get that. I'm named after my Uncle Edwin. Edwina. By the way." "I quite like it. I saw you come in a few minutes ago."
