Publisher's Synopsis
In the past, limited research has been devoted to cardiac muscle regeneration. However, recent advances in molecular and cellular biology have excited new interest in the possibilities of proliferation of the cardiac myocytes. This book presents collected papers outlining current knowledge on this subject, as well as new theories. Some topics addressed include the response of cardiac myocyte to injury, pathologies, transplantation and culture; cardiac myocyte lineage; cytofactors; and recent progress in genetic manipulation. Experimental model systems in several vertebrate forms are presented and comparisons with skeletal and smooth muscle regeneration are made.
