Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Dawn of Modern Geography, Vol. 2

IN a former volume we attempted to trace the story of geographical movements and the records of travellers and men of science from the conversion of the Roman Empire to the close of the ninth century, thus arriving at one of the darkest periods of the Middle Ages. In the present, or second, part of this survey of mediaeval geography our task will be a different one. For here we begin upon a ground which seems well-nigh entirely barren; we cross that desert which separates the earlier and later Middle Age, the 'romanesque' and the 'gothic'; and we follow the streamlet of western enterprise as it leads us into a country far richer and more abundant than any we have traversed since the age of Constantine (ad. 900.
