The story begins before she was born, during the Second World War in South Africa and continues through Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), into Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and finally back to South Africa. It took 20 years to indoctrinate her 20 years of making mistakes as a result and 20 years to unlearn that indoctrination!
