The family of John Peerybingle is visited by a guardian angel in the form of a cricket, who sits on the hearth, chirping. Considered a symbol of good luck, he watches over the family as they go through their daily lives, experiencing love and egotism. When John suspects his wife, Dot, of having an affair, the cricket is able to cement their relationship.
