Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Conventionalists
Since leaving the Euston Road I had not seen more than a dozen persons all told, and of these not less than four had been policemen. Five more had been working men, bag on shoulder, passing briskly along to some mysterious business, scenting the air for a hundred yards behind them with pungent black tobacco and that strange British combination of stale alcohol and unwashed clothes. One had been a drowsy boy, protruding a stick-like arm to take in the milk at a green-painted, blistered door; one had been a girl with her hair in curl-papers who appeared to have slept in her clothes; and the last a railway porter driving a van. I had also had a few courteous words with a sleepy but polite collie-dog.
