This is a useful companion for rudimentary communication in, as well as translation from and into the relevant languages. It covers selected fields of general interest which is also suitable for primary education. Its size and scope confine its application to elementary practical speech situations which makes it especially convenient or the layman who wishes to acquaint himself with any of the three languages (English/Afrikaans/Xhosa). This means that specialised grammatical knowledge is not a prerequisite for using the dictionary. The dictionary consists of two small English and Afrikaans dictionaries bound into one handy volume, with their inverse juxtapositions providing each of the books with equal recognition, and prominence. All the troublesome grammar complexities generally associated with the formation of Xhosa words have already been dealt with, and incorporated into the words, which are given in the manner in which they would normally be used. The dictionary includes useful extra features such as a pronunciation section. This section deals with the clicks found in the Xhosa language, vowel sounds, consonants, accent and the tone of voice. Other additional features include abbreviations, days of the week, months of the year and numbers.
