Sam Harris is an incurable optimist about women and his ability to nose out a quick profit, which is to lead him into much grief when he meets a girl called Ellen, in a tea-shop of all places. She is far from hideous and appears to move in moneyed circles, so he opens his campaign and finds her more than friendly. When she suggests a free holiday with her on the Italian Riviera he jumps at the offer - which proves very unwise of him. Ellen is not what he fondly thinks her to be, and she has some very odd associates...
