The communicative competency of children during the transition from infancy to early childhood is the subject of this book. It follows the birth of language and its development up to the beginings of complex sentences.;This text has been prepared with a number of different audiences in mind. It is intended that both begining and continuing students of linguistics should find it a useful source of information on early language and communication. It will also attempt to integrate studies from a variety of different viewpoints including developmental pyschology and formal linguistics. In doing so, it is hoped that it will contribute to an understanding of the multi-faceted nature of communication and communicative development.
