Bookseller Notes

Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf: 'For Michael Armstrong, from Conrad Aiken, 1964', noting this as 'one of the uncorrected first editions in which, on page 37, THE MUSIC should have been in small italics, at left, and NOT a new title!'.The recipient was the nephew of Martin Armstrong and Jessie McDonald - the latter was Aiken's first wife, who subsequently married his close friend. In the year of this inscription, Michael Armstrong had written a memoir of his childhood that drew the ire of his aunt for its revelation of family matters - a perspective perhaps hardened by Aiken's own memoir, 'Ushant', in which an unflattering portrait of her second husband appears.
