Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Coldstream Guards in the Crimea
The struggle for Sevastopol forms the main feature of the one great European war, in which we have been engaged, since the defeat of Napoleon I. At the battle of Waterloo. Though obscured by other events, it is still fresh in the minds of all thoughtful Englishmen and while a great deal has already been written about it, we cannot say that the subject has yet been exhausted. Indeed, this is far from being the case and it is possible that only in the present day - when the leading actors of the great drama have all disappeared - will historical criticism sufficiently elucidate many of the important points, connected with events in the East between 185 3 and 1856, which up to now have scarcely been weighed and considered as they deserve.
