Jenny Claymore left home several years ago at her stepmother's insistence to live at a boarding school, and since those days of forced separation, she has moved on to be a teacher at the same school. Now she must travel home when she receives word her father has died. Returning home isn't as terrible as she initially thought it might be, because upon her return she renews her friendship with Evan, her childhood friend and son of the local doctor, now a doctor himself. She also succumbs to the charms of Ben, her stepmother's son. After several bouts of illness with no clear cause, Jenny believes her greedy stepmother is trying to poison her.
