If there be one thing more than another that dis tinguishes these romances from those of the same age in other countries, it is their noble simplicity and com parative purity. You are hardly, however, doing justice to Blind Harry's 'wallace' in comparing it with the songs in your little book.1 These were furbished up and remodelled by a clique of literary men towards the end of the sixteenth and beginning of the seventeenth century, while his was cobbled out of his own brain at a much earlier date.
