Publisher's Synopsis

This inagural lecture, delivered on 8th December 1993, uses the metaphor of chop suey as a Western conception of Chinese culture to embrace a wide range of topics, from linguistics to politics. The author argues that, in the same way that Western chop suey is not genuine Chinese food and indeed provides an obstacle to sampling the real cuisine of the country, so Chinese Pidgin English provides a barrier to learning the language of China, and that Hong Kong itself provides a barrier to the people, politics and culture of China.
