Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Chirala-Perala Tragedy: An Episode of Voluntary Exile

I have tried to set out the facts about the chirala-perala Tragedy as clearly and dis passionately as I can. I have omitted much that I might have said. Throughout the book I have tried to understate difficulties rather than exaggerate them, for exaggeration defeats its own purpose. But I think if the reader will try to realise for himself the miserable state of affairs where a village can have no say even in simplest matters, 'where everything is under the eye of a Government official, Where initia tive is forbidden, where the ignorant people are severely repressed, he Will certainly have some idea that unrest is not unreasonable, ands surely feel the desertion or death of village units portend the destruction of Empires, or common wealths or all civilizations.
