Publisher's Synopsis

Omotic refers to a language family, the name deriving from the River Omo, which rises in the Abyssinian Highlands of Ethiopia and around which the majority of Omotic speakers are located.;The challenges in the title of this lecture refer to the separate issues of studying the relationship of Omotic to other language families, establishing the distinction between Omotic and Cushitic languages, and the challenge to obtain adequate documentation of the Omotic languages before it is too late - many of these languages are in a precarious state of health as the Ethiopian government seeks to some extent to unfiy the diverse languages of that country.
