Paul never would have consented to the substitu tion, but would have rejected it with warmth. It would be difficult to discover in his writings an instance in which Christianity is spoken of as a sys tem in the abstract, independent of the person of its author. He preached the gospel of Christ; he preached Jesus, and him crucified; he preached 9' in the (name of he called upon men to believe in Christ, to love, him, to-confess and serve him: he never preached a system merely.
