Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from The Castle Of Milan: Sixty-Four Views, With d104 By Polifilo
Whilst not showing impatience in establishing hs household in the Castle, Francesco Sforza had not however neglected to occupy himself concerning the garden, enclosed in the confines of the defences, called Ghirlanda which extended towards the North-west, reaching up to the part today oc cupied by the Race-course of San Sim. Rather than a garden, it was a large farm, called $archo, on which was cultivated, com, rye, millet, oats, and which was part meadows and part orchards: as it was situated within the coniines of the wall it was possible to breed there, deer, hares, goats, falcons, crane, and partridges; and so the Duke in order to contest a tendency towards obesity, with which he was threatened in the last years of his life, was always to be found on horseback in the Barcho, which was a locality well adapted for hunting.
