The ownership inscription is that of Bill Hopkins, the British composer and music critic, using the form of his name associated with the latter capacity ('G.W. Hopkins').The author's second play, performed in its original run by Alan Bates, Peter Woodthorpe, Donald Pleasence, Donald McWhinnie and Brian Currah, and in 1963 made into a film starring Bates, Pleasence and Robert Shaw. This edition, appearing simultaneously in hardback and paperback, preceded by the Encore edition in the same year.
