Publisher's Synopsis

Jolie Tanique Cade is a black woman who lives and works in Los Angeles, California. An employee of Amoeba Music in Hollywood, she enjoys her job but begins to absorb pressure from her mother Isabel Josephine Avery to advance in life. Jolie has an encyclopedic knowledge of cultural capital and it serves her marvelously at work. Isabel allows Jolie to share a Spanish-style bungalow with her in Leimert Park. (Leimert Park is a neighborhood in the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles. It magnetizes black artists and intellectuals.) Jolie and Isabel love each other boundlessly. Candor marks their communication. Jolie often refrains her opinion due to respect. However, Jolie unloads her feelings into her canary journal. The canary journal is emblazoned with a canary sitting atop musical scales. She records faithfully. On an afternoon jaunt to Central Library, Jolie misplaces her journal. A man named Hassan Majid contacts her to return it. They arrange a meeting at Central Library and a lunch date follows. They meet for a second time for dinner at Speranza in Silver Lake. (Silver Lake is an artsy neighborhood in Los Angeles.) Jolie declines another date after Hassan discloses that he desires to consummate the relationship. At work, Jolie meets Damien O'Connelly. Damien possesses loads of charm and wit but he wants more than Jolie is willing to give. Jolie maintains sturdy friendships with her workmates Nate and Tisi, followed by her longtime friend Kismet. Deciding that her life needs more pleasure, she pursues concerts, daytrips, and festivals with fervor. Jolie achieves independence through her online Etsy business, A Singer with Thread. The icing? She continues her life in Paris.
