The novel's main character, Buck, a domesticated dog, is kidnapped from his ranch in the Santa Clara Valley of California. Buck is sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska and reverts to a wild state, forced to fight to dominate other dogs in a harsh climate to emerge as a leader in the wild.
