In the time of Vitruvius, they fhewed at Athens, as a curious relic of antiquity, the roof ofthe Areopagus, made of clay; and at Rome, in the temple of the Capitol, the cottage of Romulus thatched with firaw. After thefe rude cfi'ays, buildings of wood were introduced, and thefe fuggelted the ideas of columns and architraves. But the workmen became every day more indu?rious and more expert. Infiead of thofe ?ight huts which fatisfied them at firf't, they began to ere�l: great walls of {tone and brick upon folid foundations, and to cover them with boards and tiles. And, in procefs of time, their refie�tions, founded on experience, led them to difcover the jail: rules of proportion.
