Two major steps are to be taken in assembling the evidence which may eventually bring us closer to the solution of these problems: the collection of texts, and the detailed study and correlation of the material collected. The first step is nearly completed in this country. Under the impetus supplied by the great students of the last two generations, Child himself, Kittredge, Barry, John Lomax, Hudson, Belden, and their fellows, the surviving songs of American and Anglo - American balladry are nearly all in print, on records, or in the various archives in a large variety of forms.
